Pap Smear & Cervical Cancer Screening: Early Detection is the Best Protection

Many women feel perfectly healthy—and that’s exactly why cervical cancer screening matters. Cervical changes can develop silently for years, without pain or visible symptoms. A Pap smear helps detect early changes in the cervix before they become serious.

At SAS Diagnostics 1967 LLP, Kolkata, we strongly believe in one simple message:

Early detection is the best protection.

What is a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear (Pap test) is a simple screening test that checks for abnormal changes in the cervix (the lower part of the uterus). These changes can be detected early and treated—often preventing cervical cancer.

“I feel healthy… does it look like I have cancer?”

You can look and feel perfectly healthy and still have changes in your cervix. A Pap smear is one of the most reliable ways to find out early.
That’s why routine screening is recommended even when everything feels normal.

After menopause: Do I still need Pap smears?

Yes. As mentioned in the leaflet, the risk of cervical cancer increases with age. If you have ever been sexually active (even with one partner), continuing screening is important.

The leaflet suggests Pap smear every two years up to around 70 years, even after menopause—your best protection against cervical cancer.

(Your doctor may adjust screening frequency based on your medical history.)

If you had a hysterectomy: Do you still need a Pap smear?

Usually, no—but there are exceptions.

According to the leaflet, you may still need Pap smears if:

  • It was not a total hysterectomy (cervix not removed), or
  • You had past treatment for severe cervical changes, or
  • Your doctor advises continued screening based on your history.

If unsure, speak to your clinician—the “right” answer depends on what exactly was removed and why.

Cervical Cancer Vaccine (HPV Vaccine)

The leaflet highlights that a vaccine is available to protect against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)—a major cause of cervical cancer. Ideally, it should be taken before first sexual contact. It also notes it is recommended after the age of 9 years, and mentions an upper age recommendation commonly referenced in India.

Important: Vaccination is powerful—but screening still remains important. Always follow your doctor’s advice on the right plan for you.
